چکیده

We have reported in a previous paper (Paper I) B,V and I band photometric data for a sample of 24 edge-on interacting spiral galaxies, together with a control sample of 7 edge-on isolated galaxies. We discuss here the main result found in this study: the ratio h/z0 of the radial exponential scalelength h to the constant scaleheight z0 is about twice smaller for interacting galaxies. This is found to be due both to a thickening of the plane, and to a radial stripping or shrinking of the stellar disk. If we believe that any galaxy experienced a tidal interaction in the past, we must conclude that continuous gas accretion and subsequent star formation can bring back the ratio h/z0 to higher values, in a time scale of 1 Gyr.

Resonant Thickening of Disks by Small Satellite Galaxies

We study the vertical heating and thickening of galaxy disks due to accretion of small satellites. Our simulations are restricted to axial symmetry, which largely eliminates numerical evolution of the target galaxy but requires the trajectory of the satellite to be along the symmetry axis of the target. We find that direct heating of disk stars by the satellite is not important because the sate...

Sinking Satellites and Tilting Disk Galaxies

The infall of a satellite galaxy onto a galactic disk generally brings in angular momentum that is not aligned with the axis of the disk. The main dynamical issues addressed are what fraction of the orbital angular momentum of the satellite and the associated energy is added to the disk, as opposed to being left in the halo, and whether the absorbed fraction is added coherently or thermalized i...

Effect of the Milky Way on Magellanic Cloud Structure

A combination of analytic models and n-body simulations implies that the structural evolution of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is dominated by its dynamical interaction with the Milky Way. Although expected at some level, the scope of the involvement has significant observational consequences. First, LMC disk orbits are torqued out of the disk plane, thickening the disk and populating a sphe...

The Growth Rate of Tidally Excited Waves in Accretion Disks

Accretion disks in close binary systems are subject to a tidally driven parametric instability which leads to the growth of internal waves near the outer edges of such disks (Goodman 1993). These waves are important in understanding the torque exerted on a disk by tidal forces and may play a role in the structure of the disk at small radii. Here we calculate the growth rate of this instability,...

Possible Local Spiral Counterparts to Compact Blue Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift

We identify nearby disk galaxies with optical structural parameters similar to those of intermediateredshift compact blue galaxies. By comparing H I and optical emission-line widths, we show that the optical widths substantially underestimate the true kinematic widths of the local galaxies. By analogy, optical emission-line widths may underrepresent the masses of intermediate-z compact objects....
